What No One Tells You About Starting Therapy (But I Will)

So, you’ve decided to start therapy. Congratulations! That’s a huge step, and you deserve a trophy, a nap, or maybe a sweet treat.

But here’s the thing no one really prepares you for: therapy is amazing… but also awkward, messy, weirdly exhausting, and sometimes makes you cry over something unexpected. Let’s talk about it.

1. You Might Overshare Immediately or Say Nothing at All

Some people come in hot — “Here’s my childhood trauma, my breakup playlist, and a color-coded list of reasons I’m emotionally avoidant.” Others sit down and suddenly forget every issue they’ve ever had, like a brain wipe.

Both are normal. I’ve been there too — after trying out a couple of therapists, I literally made a PowerPoint presentation of my trauma. Slides, transitions, the whole deal. (Yes, it helped. Yes, I recommend it.)

Your therapist isn’t judging you, even if you say “Sorry I’m talking too much” 47 times in one session. I promise.

2. There Will Be Long Silences… and That’s on Purpose

Your therapist may nod thoughtfully while sipping their coffee and let you sit in the silence. This is not because they’re rebooting. It’s because sometimes, space helps the real stuff surface.

If you hate silence? Same. Sitting with stillness has been one of the hardest skills for me to learn—even now, as a grad student training to be a therapist myself. I used to want to fill every pause with something smart or soothing. But I’m learning that sometimes, silence is the therapy.

Growth is uncomfortable, and silence can be loud—but that’s where reflection (and healing) starts.

3. You Might Cry Over Something "Weird."

Not always the big stuff. Sometimes you’re crying about how your boss didn’t say good morning, and suddenly you’re sobbing about your childhood dog, the fact that you’re emotionally tired, and how hard it is to keep up with laundry.

Welcome. You’re doing it right.

4. Therapy Isn’t Always a Quick Fix—It’s More Like Emotional Pilates

It stretches you, strengthens your awareness, and makes you sore in places you didn’t know you had feelings. You won’t always leave feeling better. Sometimes you’ll feel raw, annoyed, or like you just ran a mental marathon.

Progress isn’t linear. But it is happening.

5. You’ll Start Catching Yourself in the Wild

One day you’ll be mid-overthinking spiral and think, “Hmm… that’s a cognitive distortion.” Or you’ll set a boundary and go, “Wow, look at me regulating.”

This is when therapy starts sneaking into your everyday life — and it’s kind of amazing.

6. It’s Okay to “Shop Around” for a Therapist

Not every therapist is going to be your therapy soulmate. If the vibe is off, it’s not a failure — it’s a mismatch. Give it a few sessions, but if it still doesn’t feel right, you’re allowed to look elsewhere. Your mental health deserves the right fit.

Final Thoughts:

Therapy isn’t about being “fixed.” It’s about being seen, supported, and slowly unraveling the mental knots you’ve been carrying around. It’s weird and wonderful and absolutely worth it—even if you show up the first session just saying, “I don’t know why I’m here; I just feel… meh.”

If you’re starting therapy (or thinking about it), you’re already doing something brave. Keep going. It’s okay to cry, laugh, ramble, overthink, and ask for tissues.

Your therapist has seen it all—and they’re there to help you make sense of it, one session at a time.
