A Letter to the High-Functioning but Hollowed Out

Nov 14, 2025
2 min read

Dear Reader,

You probably don’t think this letter is for you.

You’re busy. You’re booked. You’re composed.

People turn to you when shit hits the fan. The one who can “handle it.” You get things done. You show up. You smile when you’re supposed to. You joke just enough so no one asks the hard questions. You function.

But I know that, underneath all that… you’re tired.

Not just physically, but soul-tired. That kind of ache you can’t sleep off.

That kind of hollow that sneaks in when the world quiets down and the mask starts to slip.

You might not even realize how lonely it is to be the strong one. How heavy it feels to never fall apart where people can see you. How exhausting it is to always be “fine.”

You overthink before you speak, just in case your truth is too much.

You replay conversations at night and wish you’d said less or more.

Your to-do list is a coping mechanism. Productivity is your armor.

And I also know that sometimes, when no one’s looking, you shut the door and let yourself unravel just enough to survive.

Then you wipe your face, reassemble your pieces, and go back out into the world like nothing ever cracked.

But I see the cracks. And I want you to know this:

You don’t have to earn rest by being useful.

You don’t have to be shattered to deserve help.

You don’t have to keep carrying the emotional weight of everyone around you just to prove you’re worthy of love.

You are not broken. You’re just burnt.

You’re not weak. You’re worn.

And maybe you don’t need another affirmation or action plan.

Maybe what you need is permission to stop.

To soften.

To let someone hold space for you, the way you hold it for everyone else.

This letter isn’t a fix.

It’s a mirror.

You don’t need to “be better.”

You need to be seen.

So this letter is for you. It's meant to see you. Without conditions.

With you,

Gia

If this letter landed a little too close to home… I wrote something just for you.
